Variations on this lighting device go back at least 3000 years. The jaws would hold a rush or reed gathered in a local marsh. The rush was cut to expose the pith or soft center of the plants stem. This would then be soaked in oil, usually fat from cooking. The rush would then be placed in the holder and burnt as an open wick. The original use is not recommended but the jaws can be used to hold a match, piece of wheat, flower etc.
The piece is hand forged from 1/2 inch bar stock and stands about 10 inches high. The stones will vary.
